Wrist Hang

There are three variations to wrist hang; male, female, and youth. The male participant is in the sitting position with his legs crossed. He will grab the stick with his wrist and use his other hand to grab his wrist for support. He must lift himself off the floor and above the stick. The handlers will start to walk forward for distance as soon as the participant is above the stick. He has the option of staying in one place holding his weight on the stick as well.

The female participant is also in a sitting position with her legs crossed. She will grab the stick with her dominant hand and use her other hand to grab her wrist for support. She must lift herself off the floor and above the stick. once she lifts herself above the stick, the stick handlers will move forward for distance. She also has the option of staying in one place for time. For the females, our ancestors would challenge one another to also straighten their legs forward parallel to the ground to enhance core strength.

Lastly, the youth variation to wrist hang allows him or her to grip the stick with both hands. They must lift themselves above the stick and off the floor for the stick handlers to move forward for distance or stay in place for time. Elders encouraged the youth to challenge each other and straighten their legs forward parallel to the ground like the females to enhance their strength as well.

Toe Hang

Toe hang mimicked freezing your feet which was common in the fall, winter, and spring.

To start, the participant will be lying on their back on the floor. There will be two stick handlers to lift this participant. The participant will position themselves under the stick with their legs stretched out and feet positioned above the stick. The participant will wrap both arms around their legs behind their knees linking their hands. The participant will position his toes to grip the stick to be lifted.

The participant will tighten all of his muscles, position his head as close to his legs as possible and say go for the handlers to lift him off the floor with only his toes gripping the stick. Once lifted off the floor, the stick handlers will walk forward for distance or the participant has the option of hanging for time. The participant who goes the furthest distance or hangs for the longest period of time, enduring the most pain, is declared the winner of toe hang. There are no differences in techniques used between male and females.
